Jason H. Bell, MD, PhD, FACS
Jason H. Bell, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S., was born and raised in Cincinnati, and attended Anderson High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 1996 from Denison University, graduating in three years time. With a strong interest in research, he earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2001 from Wesleyan University in Connecticut while working to combat bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Following a short post-doctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School studying the molecular genetics of retinal degenerative disease, he returned to Cincinnati and earned his M.D. in 2005 from the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. He did an internship in Internal Medicine at the University Hospital, and completed his residency in 2009 in Ophthalmology at the University Hospital as well, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. He then spent 3 months doing a mini-fellowship in refractive surgery in New York with Drs. Eric Donnenfeld and Jack Dodick.
Dr. Bell has published many original scientific articles in several basic and clinical science journals regarding the biochemistry of topics ranging from the enzymology of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, cardiac pathophysiology during open heart surgery, and the ocular molecular genetics of retinal degenerative disease. As a resident, he co-authored a book chapter on Iris Reconstruction Surgery for the leading textbook in corneal, refractive, and anterior segment surgery with Dr. Michael Snyder at CEI.
Dr. Bell is a comprehensive ophthalmologist handling all medical and surgical diseases of the eye. He performs standard and custom cataract surgery, laser surgery, and anterior segment surgery. He performs refractive surgical procedures including LASIK and PRK. He handles the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma, and the diagnosis and management of diabetic eye disease and age related macular degeneration. He also provides diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of common eyelid disorders.
Dr. Bell is also a Volunteer Faculty of Ophthalmology with the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine teaching ophthalmology residents how to perform cataract surgery at the VA Medical Center and University-Holmes Hospital. He also teaches residents how to perform ocular reconstruction after devastating ocular injuries as an ocular trauma surgeon for the University Hospital Level I Trauma Center.
Dr. Bell is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, Ohio Ophthalmological Society, Cincinnati Society of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association. He is a member of American Society of Ocular Trauma, and was recently inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Bell has been honored as one of Cincinnati’s Top Doctors for 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Adam H. Kaufman, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Adam H. Kaufman, M.D., F.A.C.S. is one of the tri-state's leading corneal and anterior segment surgeons. He is Chief of Corneal and Refractive Surgery Service and Chief of the Uveitis Service at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He is Director of the LASIK program at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He is Director of Corneal and Anterior Segment Surgery at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Kaufman sees patients at University Medical Arts Building and the Blue Ash office of Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI).
Dr. Kaufman has been repeatedly selected by the publication Best Doctors in America, and in Cincinnati Magazine's Top Doctor issue. Dr. Kaufman is a Harvard Fellowship-trained corneal specialist with broad surgical expertise that includes corneal transplants, LASIK, and cataract surgery. Dr. Kaufman's surgical expertise also includes multiple anterior segment procedures such as pterygium surgery, conjunctival surgery, excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy, and post-traumatic anterior segment reconstruction surgery. Dr. Kaufman is also an authority in pediatric corneal transplants and pediatric intraocular lens implantation. Dr. Kaufman is a Harvard Fellowship-trained uveitis specialist, and is the Tristate's only uveitis specialist.
Dr. Kaufman has many years experience with LASIK Laser Vision Correction. He served as a co-investigator on the VISX excimer laser while he was a Corneal Fellow in 1992 and 1993. By being one of the first surgeons to perform laser vision correction in Cincinnati following FDA approval, Dr. Kaufman has been able to actively teach laser vision correction techniques to other surgeons. He has directed three symposia on Laser Vision Correction for the region's Ophthalmologists. He has trained four refractive surgery Fellows and has twice been awarded the Teaching Award of the Department of Ophthalmology at University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Kaufman received his Medical Degree from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Following a one-year Internship in Internal Medicine at the New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Kaufman received his Ophthalmology training at the Columbia, Presbyterian Medical Center at Columbia University. After his Ophthalmology Residency, Dr. Kaufman completed subspecialty Fellowship training at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Kaufman is an expert in the healing process after laser vision correction. Dr. Kaufman maintains an active research program to study corneal wound healing, and he has been involved in Excimer laser research since 1991. He has also served as a principal co-investigator on several research studies to evaluate new ophthalmic medications. He has published articles and book chapters, and he regularly presents his work at the annual meetings of the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Kaufman has received a Career Development Award from Research to Prevent Blindness.
Dr. Kaufman is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Michael E. Snyder, M.D.
Michael E. Snyder, M.D. specializes in diseases and surgery of the front of the eye, including small-incision, topical anesthesia cataract surgery. His special interests include traumatic cataract surgery, iris repair, corneal transplantation, and refractive surgery. Dr. Snyder has, with Dr. Robert Osher, pioneered artificial iris prosthesis use in the United States, aiding in the rehabilitation of acquired traumatic iris defects or congenital iris defects such as aniridia and ocular albinism. Dr. Snyder has developed extensive expertise with presbyopia-correcting intraocular implant lenses.
He completed both his undergraduate degree in Psychology and his Medical Degree from University of Michigan, followed by his Internship in Internal Medicine and General Surgery at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center of Denver, Colorado. Dr. Snyder served as Resident and Chief Resident in Ophthalmology at Krieger Eye Institute of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. He then pursued subspecialty training in cataract, anterior segment & refractive surgery, corneal & external diseases, and ocular immunology at New England Eye Center and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. Following his Fellowship, Dr. Snyder cultivated a referral practice in cataract and corneal surgery in Albany, New York where he also taught Residents as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Albany Medical College. He joined the growing and internationally recognized Cincinnati Eye Institute in 1997.
At Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI), Dr. Snyder continues to couple his clinical activities with an active interest in both teaching and research. Dr. Snyder is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He is actively involved in teaching other ophthalmologist through these organizations and as a frequent "Guest Professor" nationally and internationally.
He continues to contribute to Ophthalmology textbooks and scientific journals as author, editor and reviewer. He sits on the Editorial Boards of the EyeWorld and Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today. Additionally, Dr. Snyder has produced several award-winning surgical videos.
Dr. Snyder is actively involved in developing new devices for intraocular implantation and new ophthalmic applications for pharmaceuticals including FDA studies. Dr. Snyder was the first in the US to implant an artificial iris custom-matched to the uninjured eye.
He serves on the medical staff of Bethesda North Hospital in Ohio and St. Luke's and St. Elizabeth's Hospitals in Northern Kentucky. Dr. Snyder teaches residents locally as a Volunteer Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Cincinnati. His peers have repeatedly elected him to Best Doctors in America.
Gary A. Varley, M.D.
Gary A. Varley, M.D. completed his undergraduate studies graduating Summa Cum Laude from Alma College in Alma, Michigan. After receiving his Doctor of Medicine at University of Michigan Medical School, he completed his Internship and Residency in Ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. He served as Chief Resident for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation's Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Varley then spent an additional year of training as a Heed Ophthalmic Fellow specializing in cornea and external disease at the Iowa Lions Cornea Center at University of Iowa. He spent additional time at Louisiana State University studying refractive and excimer laser surgery with the pioneers in this field. After completing his training, he joined the professional staff at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he served as the Principle Investigator for the Cleveland Clinic's excimer laser program.
Dr. Varley joined Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI) in 1994 as a cornea and refractive surgical specialist. He serves as the Director of CEI's Laser Vision Center where he specializes in laser vision correction. His commitment and work in the area of laser vision correction earned him the Visx Star Award.
In addition to his vast experience in PRK and LASIK, Dr. Varley also performs cataract surgery and manages patients with challenging corneal disease. Dr. Varley has published extensively, lectured frequently and continues to be selected as one of the Best Doctors in America and Top Doctors in Cincinnati.
