| Dr. Joshua J. Sands grew up in Long Island, New York. He initially
attended Columbia University. After 2 years he decided to leave college and join the
work force. After a number of different jobs he finally decided on a career in
medicine. Following the woman who would become his wife to Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Sands returned to college at Creighton University. He graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Sociology. He then obtained his M.D. from the Creighton University School of Medicine graduating cum laude. Shortly after arriving at the University of Cincinnati to do his residency in Ophthalmology, Dr. Sands and his wife had their fourth son. During his residency, the Sands family decided to stay in Cincinnati and he was offered a faculty position at the University of Cincinnati after completing his training. Dr. Sands started a practice in Comprehensive Ophthalmology with a special interest in cataract surgery at the University. He has been Chief of the Ophthalmology Section, Cincinnati Veteran's Hospital since 1986 and Director of the Residency Program at the University of Cincinnati Department of Ophthalmology since 1990. He has been director of the Cataract Surgery Service at the University of Cincinnati since 1990. Academically, Dr. Sands was appointed Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology in 1995. In 1995, Dr. Sands and a medical student established the University of Cincinnati VisionQuest organization. VisionQuest brings together Ophthalmologists, medical students, Optometrists, Optometry students, Ophthalmology residents, nurses, and other ophthalmic personnel for medical and surgical eye missions. They have undertaken a mission every year since 1995. Dr. Sands is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and former president of the Cincinnati Society of Ophthalmology. |
