![]() Anup K. Khatana, M.D. joined Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI) as a glaucoma specialist in 2000. Before joining CEI, he spent four years in Kansas City, dividing his time between private practice and academics, serving as Director of the Glaucoma Service and Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. In 1999, he was honored as Teacher of the Year. Dr. Khatana grew up in Detroit, completed his undergraduate, medical school and Ophthalmology Residency training at Wayne State University, Kresge Eye Institute Department of Ophthalmology. He served as Chief Resident during his last year at Kresge Eye Institute, and then completed a Glaucoma Fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia before receiving Board Certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology. Glaucoma is often referred to as the "sneak thief" of sight because the most common types of glaucoma do not cause any symptoms until the optic nerve has significant damage. Glaucoma is actually a complex group of disorders that all produce a similar and typical pattern of optic nerve fiber death resulting in typical patterns of loss in the field of vision. Because glaucoma kills optic nerve fibers, early diagnosis is critical. CEI has the latest in visual field and optic nerve testing technology that aids in early detection. The first line of therapy for glaucoma is usually eye drops to lower the intraocular pressure. There are also several different laser procedures that have proven effective in fighting glaucoma. For patients who cannot be controlled with medical or laser therapy, there are now several surgical options to treat glaucoma and these can often be combined with the latest cataract surgical techniques. Dr. Khatana has a particular interest and specializes in the management of various complicated and advanced forms of glaucoma in addition to performing cataract and implant surgery. Outside of medicine, Dr. Khatana enjoys music, movies, tennis, skiing, and spending time with his family. |
