Daniele Saltarelli, O.D. attended a one-week medical eye mission in Saintard, Haiti this past October. Dr. Saltarelli joined the mission which was headed by Dr. Eric Purdy of Ft. Wayne, Ind. and hosted by Dr. Mark and Kathy Fulton of local NGO, Mission Haiti Medical (https://www.missionhaitimedical.org).
Eye exam and operations were conducted at the Hospital Reformee, which provides healthcare services and 24/7 emergency care to Haitians through a medical clinic, dental clinic, eye clinic, two operating rooms, pharmacy, lab and a prosthetics unit. The hospital staff consists of more than 50 Haitian medical professionals seeing about 500 patients a week.
“I really enjoyed the experience which was my first medical eye mission,” said Dr. Saltarelli. “I hope to get more involved in international eye care going forward.”
Dr. Saltarelli heads to Guatemala this spring.
