Get to Know Dr. Hinel

Erich A. Hinel O.D., M.S., is a member of the cornea, glaucoma, and uveitis teams at the Cincinnati Eye Institute. He sees patients at the University Medical Arts Building in Clifton and at the main office in Blue Ash.

Dr. Hinel completed his undergraduate education in biomedical science at Grand Valley State University. He studied optometry at The Ohio State University and graduated cum laude. In addition, he was invited to concurrently complete a master’s degree in vision science and contributed to research projects and publications in dry eye and ocular surface disease. He was selected to the Beta Sigma Kappa and Gold Key Optometric honor societies and was recognized as the Senior Student of the Year by the Ohio Optometric Association.

Following his graduation, he completed a 13-month post-Doctoral Residency Program in Ocular Disease at CEI. After finishing his training, Dr. Hinel joined CEI focusing his practice on the medical and pre-and-post surgical management of cornea, glaucoma, and uveitis disorders.

Dr. Hinel serves as assistant residency director for the optometric ocular disease residency at CEI. Additionally, he is a volunteer Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology within the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and also is a consultant for the Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. He is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Ohio Optometric Association. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, and is a Board-Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry where he also serves on the board directors.
