Get to Know Dr. Cohen

John S. Cohen, M.D. is Director Emeritus of the Glaucoma Service at the Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI). He is a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine, received his Ophthalmology training at the University of Cincinnati, and completed his glaucoma Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Cohen was Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of South Florida from 1975 to 1977 where he taught glaucoma and cataract implant surgery. He was Chief of the Glaucoma Service at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine from 1977 to 1984, is presently Volunteer Clinical Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Director Emeritus of the Glaucoma Service, Cincinnati Eye Institute.

Dr. Cohen performed clinical research in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma, has published many articles and textbook chapters, produced numerous teaching videotapes, and has lectured in the United States and internationally on glaucoma and cataract surgery. He has organized and led courses designed to train ophthalmologists in the use of glaucoma laser surgery. He is a founder of the Annual Midwest Glaucoma Symposium, which has held yearly glaucoma meetings in the Midwest since 1977, and sponsors the annual John S. Cohen Lecture in his honor. Ophthalmologists from the United States and other countries have trained under Dr. Cohen’s supervision at the Cincinnati Eye Institute.

Dr. Cohen was a member of the visiting faculty of Orbis International and taught medical and surgical care of cataract and glaucoma while in Rijeka, Yugoslavia; Davao, Philippines; Hyderabad, India; Shanto, Taiyuan and Chingdao, China; San Jose, Costa Rica; Port-of-Spain, Trinidad-Tobago, Varna, Bulgaria, and Yerevan, Armenia on their DC 10 flying eye hospital.

Dr. Cohen and his wife, Julie, a retired teacher, enjoy family, volunteering in the community and hiking. Dr. Cohen is an enthusiastic fly fisherman.
