Understanding Your Aging Face and Treatment Options

How to Combat Facial Aging?

With age comes experience, understanding, accomplishments, and wisdom…as well as some potentially unwelcome changes to our appearance. Our faces are the most visible part of our body, and the face is also one of the first parts of the body to show signs of aging.

Each person ages differently, and we’ve found that by helping our patients understand the underlying causes of facial aging, we can help them identify the best treatments to target their individual concerns.

Sources and Causes of Facial Aging

If you are considering cosmetic treatments to rejuvenate your facial appearance, it is important to understand the causes of your concerns so that you can address them most effectively. Layer by layer, from the skin on the surface to the underlying structures, the most significant causes of facial aging are:

Skin: As the skin ages, it produces less collagen and elastin. This causes mature skin to retain less moisture, making it thinner and less supple and leading to uneven texture, discoloration, and, yes, wrinkles.

Fat: In younger individuals, fat pads located under the skin of the face are plump and high, but these areas thin out and descend with age. This can create a hollow appearance to the eyes and a loss of volume in the cheek, chin, temples, and forehead areas, aging a person’s appearance. Additionally, excess fat may accumulate at the bottom of the face and beneath the chin, causing the appearance of a double chin, enhanced jowls, and a loose, saggy neck.

Muscle: The muscles beneath the fat on the face are responsible for all of our facial expressions, and the repeated formation of these expressions eventually causes the skin to crease and form wrinkles.

Bone: The gradual loss of facial bone structure is a natural part of the aging process, and eventually brings about changes in the dimensions and contours of the face.
