Who is a Candidate for LASIK?

Preparing for LASIK Vision Correction Surgery
The first step in preparing for LASIK laser vision correction is to attend a consultation and eye exam with an experienced eye doctor at our Middletown, OH office. Once you are deemed to be a good candidate for LASIK, your procedure will be scheduled and you will be given detailed pre- and postoperative instructions.
You will be asked not to wear contact lenses for at least one week before the day of your LASIK procedure, as contacts can alter the shape of the cornea. You will also be asked to arrive for your appointment with no creams, lotions, or makeup on your face.
Please note that you will not be permitted to drive yourself home after your LASIK procedure, so you will need to make arrangements for a friend or family member for transportation.
The LASIK Procedure
Before your LASIK procedure begins, your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic eye drops and a device will be used to hold your eyes open so you won’t need to worry about blinking. You will recline comfortably while the eye surgeon uses an IntraLase laser to create a very small flap in the cornea. An excimer laser will then be used to make miniscule adjustments to the shape of your cornea before the flap is gently put back into place. The incision used for LASIK is so small that it will naturally heal itself: no sutures are needed.
You will be fitted with a protective shield over your eyes and will rest briefly here at our office before you are discharged to relax and recover at home.2
Recovery After LASIK
You may experience blurry vision immediately after your LASIK vision correction procedure, but this will significantly improve within 24 hours. Your eyes may also feel itchy or uncomfortable, and they may also water, but your eye doctor will give you eye drops that will improve your comfort. Most of our patients are able to get back to work and normal activities the day after their LASIK procedure.
LASIK Results
The majority of our patients start to notice an improvement in their vision within a day or two after their LASIK procedure, and the results only get better over the next week. The American Refractive Surgery Council reports that more than 90% of LASIK eye surgery recipients achieve 20/20 vision or better.3
Frequently Asked Questions About LASIK
Is LASIK painful?
No. Before your LASIK procedure begins, your ophthalmologist will use anesthetic eye drops to numb your eyes, and you will also be given medication to help you stay comfortable as you recover. Pain should not be part of your LASIK experience.
Is LASIK safe?
LASIK is considered to be a safe laser eye surgery procedure, with the American Refractive Surgery Council reporting that fewer than 1% of patients experiencing complications.4 Risks and side effects of LASIK, while very rare, may include:
- Dry eye
- Halos
- Increased light sensitivity
- Inflammation of the cornea
Can I have LASIK on both eyes at once?
Yes! In fact, we encourage our patients to undergo LASIK on both eyes on the same day, since this consolidates their recovery time and gets them to clearer vision that much sooner.
When can I drive after LASIK?
You won’t be permitted to drive yourself home after LASIK. You may experience blurry vision for a few days after your procedure. We tell our patients that they can drive whenever they feel safe to do so.
